The July edition of the FES/APE newsletter is dedicated to the Republic of Moldova–European Union summit, recently held in Chisinau – a symbolic moment, but also with strategic potential for the country’s European future.
The newsletter explores the political implications of the event, the expectations of European partners and perceptions in society. In the context of major challenges – from stagnating reforms to hybrid pressures – the summit becomes an important test for the political class in Chisinau.
We propose a series of opinions and analyses signed by experts who look at this moment from complementary angles:
– Mihai Mogildea, deputy director of the Institute for European Policies and Reforms (IPRE), claims that the summit was a clear signal of the openness of the European Union member states towards the Republic of Moldova and its accession path.
– Natalia Stercul, executive director of the Association for Foreign Policy (APE), interprets the summit as an important political barometer of the Moldova-EU relationship. She points out that these types of events have the potential to become catalysts for European integration, but only to the extent that they are followed by concrete, transparent and credible actions from the government.
– Cătălin Gabriel Done, deputy director of ESGA (Expert Group on Security and Global Affairs), approaches the summit from the perspective of the relationship between the state and the citizen. In his opinion, the European discourse must be accompanied by a new “social contract” – a clear commitment from state institutions to citizens, which should include transparency, accountability and the fight against corruption.
The editorial of this edition is signed by Madalin Necsutu, journalist for TVR Moldova and Balkan Insight, who highlights the tension between the strategic opportunity of the moment and the risk of political instrumentalization in an electoral year with major stakes for the future of the country.
